our senior's MA report

LEARNING OUTCOME: CIMA GAME

On 25th of July 2009, our Management Accounting lecturer, Mr. Chiau Choon Kiak organised a CIMA game known as “Origami in Space Business Game: Aeroplane Sales”. The main objective of this game is to expose the participants to a real-life business scenario which enable the participants to apply them in the reality world. Besides, it also enables the participants to work as a team as there are several of roles in their respective team. This measure can also be applied in this reality world and communication skills come in handy when communicate with different people around the world.

In this CIMA game, the team members were required to fold paper planes according the scale model that being shown in a clip by one of the CIMA staff there. Team which are able to obtain the highest profit from the number of planes sold based on the quantity and precision will be crowned as a winning team at the end of the day for the CIMA game. Different teams are provided with different colours of paper to avoid confusion in the later game. Mr. CK was there as an observer throughout the whole game and he even gave us some information on which part is the most important part for the game itself.

The day before the CIMA game, my team members actually took the initiative on making different types of origami planes as a preparation for the CIMA game on the next day in case we would have to make our own origami plane. We even tried flying the planes that we have made to test which plane could fly the furthest among all the planes. After the plane flying session, most of the members were advised to go home and practice to fold the chosen planes so that we would able to remember how it was fold and it might come in handy during the CIMA game.

However, the scale model was given during the CIMA game. All our effort gone to drain as we could not use the origami planes that we had fold on the day before this CIMA game held which meant to be the original plan during that day. Although we only get to know the scale model was given on the CIMA game day, our team members did not make a big fuss about it. On the other hand, we just follow the instructions they had given to us and try to make the best out of it. My team did not win for the CIMA game after much effort we had put in. However, we are not sad and still looking towards for another game if it is possible and try our best again in the future. There might be some reason why the team did not do as well as the winning team.

Firstly, I see other teams’ origami planes outnumbered our team’s planes. Most probably because my team was more into the quality of the planes being folded compared to the quantity of planes. My team stressed more on the quality of each and every plane, therefore, we folded them as precise as we can to avoid any plane being rejected. On the other hand, some other teams which enforced on the quantity of planes are able to achieve a much higher profit although they have got quite a number of defected planes.

Secondly, I think my team is not well-organised during the folding session. Distribution of job were not that effective in the first round of the game as everyone have to cut the paper and fold it themselves, which might cause the speed of the production being slowed down. In the second round, we have only thought of ideas that job being distributed equally as in, someone in charge of the cutting, and someone in charge of folding certain parts of the planes, and then pass it to another person in the team. It works well this way as our production speed drastically increase and we can fold a lot more planes compared to the first round.

Now I would like to talk about the roles in my team.

Firstly, I would like to talk about the CEO in my team. I believed that my team CEO has already done her best during the CIMA game. She eventually does the stuffs that CEO should do as in making and listening to all the decisions and think wisely before she made any decision. She even asked us to stayed back on the day before the CIMA game to discuss about the team’s original plan so that we would be prepare for that day. I would say that she has leadership quality as she can make her own decision. She also knows her role very well during the CIMA game. She even listens to other’s opinions and suggestions. She is not those democratic types who make all the decision by herself without discussing with other people.

Besides, she also placed an arrangement for the rest of the team members accordingly on where they are supposed to stand around the table. She asked us to arrange ourselves according to our roles and positions in the team. I find it very effective because we would not get confused among ourselves on who should we find when it come into certain situation.

Overall, my team’s CEO is pretty good as she knows what is the right way to make our production effective is. Not missing that she also has leadership quality and fully understand what the project about.

Our team engineer had done a great job too. He did research on the origami planes and printed out quite a number of scale models for us as a preparation for the game, unfortunately, it came in useless as the scale model was given on the game itself. However, we will still appreciate his great effort that he put in for this CIMA game. Even though the original plan has been washed down into drains, he still put in much effort in folding planes during the game session.

Among all the groups in CIMA game, I think the finance manager in my team excel the most as I can only see our finance manager doing the calculations, while the rest of finance manager of the different teams were still busy folding plane. Even CK commented on that. Finance manager was doing some budgets and compared to actual result. My opinion is finance manager should set the target higher than normal rate and achievable, the members were not be motivated when she was setting the normal rate because this target is too easy to achieve and not challenging enough.

Credits were also given to the sales manager as she set a target for our team which can be achieved by our team. However, it is still not good enough as compared to the other team most probably because the number of planes that we are required to fold. I would advise that she should set a higher number of planes that requires us to fold in order to motivate us, at the same time, stressing us, which will be quite a good thing for the motivation of the whole team.

Quality control manager is just basically checked on the precision of the air planes we made. She even stress out on which part we part of the plane we should concentrate and showed us the correct way to fold the planes especially the pointed part. After each and every plane that we made, she checked it and point out where is our mistake. This is a step of precaution in order to avoid any defected plane being sent to the client. This would enable those planes that we made has a higher precision in every single part of it. Her efforts are greatly appreciated.

Factory manager mainly supervise his production specialist. What I can say that factory manager got nothing much different from production specialist as our job is basically on folding these origami planes. My group have 5 production specialists, each and every one of them has their own speed when it comes to folding origami planes. Some can fold quickly and nicely, and some need a longer time to fold those planes in order to achieve a better precision for those planes.

CONCLUSION

I can conclude that this game has definitely has its own pros and cons.

The pro is I can actually feel pressure mainly because of the insufficient time for us to rush to complete the origami plane. It happen especially one of the CIMA staff was doing the countdown because it’s almost time for all the teams to send in all the planes that we had fold to the person in charge.

I also learn that teamwork is require in order to complete certain tasks in the most efficient way. This is applicable in this reality world because we do not know who we will be working with in the future. So, it is better for everyone to fork out their own good attitude in order to cooperate with one and another.

However, there is still con for it. I am expecting much more challenging task which could be given to us except folding planes according to their scale model. They should at least allow us to build our own scale model so that they can comment on it and way to improve our own model.

Anyhow, I appreciate that Mr. CK and CIMA staffs for putting effort in organising this game. I am able to obtain roughly knowledge on how the outside works. Thank you very much.
